Overview
Instacart's shopper documentation describes shop-and-deliver, shop-only and delivery-only orders. A batch can combine customer orders and stores. These are task types; a shop-only label does not by itself mean you have been offered an hourly employee role. Check the role and agreement in your own application. Official batch-access guide
The shopper earnings page says you can see details including stores, items and units, delivery distance, batch pay and expected tips before accepting. Pay reflects the batch as a whole. A larger displayed total can therefore represent more customers and work rather than a better-paying single order. Instacart earnings guide
Shopping skill changes the workload
Read both item count and quantity. A list with repeated heavy items creates a different carrying problem from the same number of small products. Consider checkout queues, store familiarity, temperature-sensitive items and the delivery instructions you can see.
Start with an order you can keep organized. If a batch serves multiple customers, keep products separated throughout shopping, checkout and delivery. For substitutions, follow the customer's choices and the app's workflow rather than assuming a similar-looking item is acceptable. Different sizes, ingredients or dietary needs can make an apparently simple replacement unsuitable.
Evaluate money after the batch settles
Instacart lists batch pay, promotions and tips as earnings components. Its documentation explains that tips can change, including percentage-based tips affected by refunds or replacements. Treat the expected tip as an estimate until the applicable adjustment period has passed. Pay and tip details
Measure the entire work period, including getting to stores, waiting for batches, shopping, checkout and delivery. Record vehicle and equipment costs alongside receipts. Do not compare a successful batch's completion time with another job's full shift; include the gaps as well.
Availability is a separate question
Instacart explains that device connectivity, location and account-related criteria affect batch access. An approved account does not mean a particular store will offer work when you want it. How access works
Before buying bags or other equipment, check current signup eligibility, local openings, transport requirements and any certifications needed for the tasks you want. Then test familiar stores and assess whether the physical load, replacement messages and driving fit your schedule.
