Overview
Cambly connects English learners with tutors for one-to-one online conversation. Its recruitment page says a teaching certificate, degree and previous teaching experience are not required. That makes it worth considering if your strength is patient conversation rather than a specialist academic subject. Conversation practice still calls for teaching judgment. A learner may need help describing a work problem, understanding a phrase or speaking without stopping to translate. Prepare prompts that invite longer answers, then ask follow-up questions. Correcting every sentence can interrupt the practice the student came for; ask whether they prefer immediate corrections or a short recap.
Pay: lesson minutes versus available time
Cambly currently publishes $0.17 per minute for its main service and $0.20 per minute for Cambly Kids. Those equal $10.20 and $12.00 for sixty paid conversation minutes, respectively. They are not a promise that every hour you make available will be filled. The company advertises weekly payments and no minimum working hours. To evaluate it, record both paid minutes and the total time you reserve for tutoring. Include profile work, preparation and gaps between sessions. Dividing receipts by that larger time total gives a more useful comparison with other work than multiplying the minute rate by sixty.
Before you apply
- Test whether your audio remains clear during a full conversation, not just a brief microphone check
- Choose a quiet space where you can listen without exposing other people's conversations
- Prepare an introduction that accurately describes your interests and the learners you can help
- Check the application for current location, identity, equipment and program-specific requirements
Do not buy new equipment solely because submitting a profile is possible. First check whether applications are being processed and whether your existing setup is suitable. If you need dependable hours immediately, an intake restriction makes this a poor option to rely on alone.
