Think of this as building a small tutoring practice. You need a clear subject offering, a workable calendar and a way to explain why your approach suits a particular learner. A profile that names a course level and describes the problems you help with is more useful to a prospective student than broad claims about being an expert in everything.

Wyzant's fee page states a 25% platform fee, with tutors retaining 75% of their posted rate before any applicable taxes. It also describes a referral exception for qualifying new students brought to the platform by a tutor; that is not a blanket promise that every lesson avoids fees. Your listed rate also needs to support preparation and administration. For in-person work, include travel time when evaluating a booking. For online sessions, account for reviewing assignments, preparing examples and troubleshooting materials. Compare retained income against the whole commitment rather than treating a booked lesson hour as the entire job.

Clarify the subject, level, learner's goal and the materials they expect to use. Ask for enough context to prepare without requesting unnecessary personal information. Explain scheduling and cancellation expectations before reserving time, and follow Wyzant's current payment and communication rules.

Prepare a small diagnostic exercise so the first session can uncover gaps rather than become an hour of guessing. End with a brief recap of what the student can now do and what to practice. Keep promises narrow: explain your process instead of guaranteeing grades, test scores or acceptance to a school.

Track inquiries, completed lessons, retained revenue and total time. If inquiries repeatedly fall outside your expertise, improve the profile's scope before cutting prices. If travel dominates the work, consider a smaller service area or online sessions. Do not purchase extensive materials until you know what your actual learners need.
