Overview
Varsity Tutors connects learners with tutoring across school subjects, test preparation, languages and professional topics. Its public service page describes one-to-one tutoring and live classes. The terms of use describe experts providing services through separately negotiated independent-contractor agreements. Those general pages do not establish the pay or conditions of a particular tutoring opportunity. Service overview and terms of use
For a prospective tutor, the useful question is whether a platform-arranged student relationship fits the way you teach. A recurring learner may need a planned sequence of lessons, while a one-off subject question requires you to assess the problem quickly. Decide which format you can support before offering a wide range of subjects.
Evaluate the actual offer
We are not publishing a universal hourly-pay range. The public application page required JavaScript during this review, and a general marketing page cannot verify what an individual tutor will be offered. Do not assume an old job advertisement, another tutor's rate or a student-facing price applies to you.
Before committing, obtain clear answers to these questions:
- What rate applies to this subject and session format, and what must happen for it to change?
- Are preparation, student messages, session notes and cancellations paid?
- What availability must you maintain, and how much notice can either side give for a change?
- Which locations, qualifications and technical requirements are eligible for this particular opportunity?
- How are completed sessions reported, and when does payment become available?
Keep the written answers with the offer. A headline rate is hard to compare with other work unless you know how many unpaid tasks surround each session.
Prepare for the teaching itself
Make a short sample lesson around a concept you know well. Include a diagnostic question, an explanation and a second problem that checks whether the learner understood. This demonstrates more than a list of subjects on a résumé.
For recurring lessons, leave time to review the previous session and plan the next one. Keep student material in approved tools and avoid using identifiable student work as a public portfolio sample. Start with availability you can reliably maintain; a large calendar is not useful if it creates repeated rescheduling.
