Overview

Tutor.com connects learners with online tutors for subject help. Its public application page describes work with learners from school through continuing education, with remote sessions and payment on a regular schedule. This is worth investigating if you prefer responding to a learner's immediate question over designing and marketing a complete course. Tutor.com application overview

A useful self-test is whether you can explain a familiar concept in more than one way. Knowing the answer is different from identifying why a student is stuck. Practice asking what they have tried, locating the misunderstanding and guiding the next step without doing the assignment for them.

Eligibility and equipment deserve an early check

The applicant FAQ lists U.S. residency, work eligibility, a valid Social Security number, subject expertise and availability for at least five hours weekly. It specifies a completed four-year degree or enrollment as a college sophomore or higher toward one. The application page notes that Puerto Rico is accepted but other U.S. territories are excluded. These are application criteria, not approval guarantees. Applicant FAQ and application location notice

The FAQ also lists a Windows-based computer environment and detailed connection, audio, camera and software requirements. Read that list before spending time on subject exams, particularly if your only computer is a Mac or Chromebook. A device that handles ordinary video calls is not automatically suitable. Pay questions to resolve

Tutor.com says its hourly rate depends on the subjects taught and that pay details follow the initial application and subject-exam phase. The reviewed page does not establish a single public rate for every tutor. Official pay explanation

Before accepting an offer, ask which activities are paid: live sessions, scheduled waiting, written reviews, training and administrative work may need different treatment. Ask how cancellation, technical interruption and session overruns are handled. Use the written offer rather than an anonymous salary average to assess whether the arrangement suits you.

A practical starting plan

Choose subjects you can explain confidently now, then review the platform's concept lists. Prepare examples that demonstrate patient questioning and clear written steps. Keep a record of application time and any required software costs. Once working, compare total receipts with all time committed, including preparation, so the advertised lesson rate does not hide the rest of the workload.
