Task / session time: 25–50 min
Standard 25- or 50-minute scheduled lessons The scheduling guide documents 25- and 50-minute options and a 50-minute default. Longer sessions are explicitly available, so 50 is not the platform maximum. These are scheduled options, excluding preparation and messages.

Startup budget: $0 USD
The recruitment page explicitly says the profile, student exposure, tools and materials are free and charges are commissions on taught lessons. This goes beyond free signup. Trial commission consumes full lesson revenue but is not a required tutor cash payment before earning.
Assumptions: US online tutoring using already suitable equipment/connectivity and supplied platform tools/materials; optional materials purchases excluded; commissions withheld from earned revenue are not upfront cash spending.

Overview

Preply is a tutoring marketplace where students choose tutors and tutors set their prices and availability. Its recruitment page covers languages as well as other subjects, and says specific teaching certification or prior teaching experience is not required. A profile needs a photo, description, introduction video and availability; a computer, webcam, microphone and stable connection are needed for its classroom. Approval and bookings are separate steps. The main decision is whether you want to build an ongoing teaching practice. Being able to explain a subject is only part of that work. You also need to describe who your lessons help, assess a student's starting point and keep a schedule that supports their next lesson.

Understand the commission before choosing a price

Preply's published model takes 100% commission on a trial lesson with each new student. Subsequent lessons begin at 33% commission, declining to 18% as teaching hours accumulate. A free profile therefore does not mean you keep the listed lesson price. Preply commission information

Evaluate your own mix of trials and paid follow-up lessons. Track the money retained after commission against all teaching, preparation and messaging time. A calendar full of first meetings can produce a very different result from the same teaching time spent with continuing students. Check current commission thresholds and withdrawal conditions in the platform before budgeting around them.

Build a focused offer

Start with a specific learner and outcome you can genuinely support: for example, a language learner who wants to practice explaining their job. In your profile, explain what happens during a lesson and how you adapt it. Avoid claiming expertise in subjects you would need to relearn while the student waits.

For a trial, prepare a short diagnostic activity and leave time to discuss a realistic plan. Give the student a useful experience without promising a result you cannot control. Keep reusable exercises organized by skill so preparation does not grow without limit as bookings increase.

Before changing your price, review whether inquiries match the learners you want, whether your availability is sustainable and how much unpaid work each student needs. Automatically starting at the lowest possible price can make a demanding lesson format hard to sustain.
