Overview
Etsy is a marketplace with specific rules about what can be sold. Its Creativity Standards distinguish items made, designed, handpicked or sourced by sellers and explain the limits of each category. A product being popular elsewhere does not establish that it is eligible for Etsy.
For example, the standards address original digital designs, production partners and vintage items. Sellers using production partners must provide the required disclosures. Read the section that applies to your actual production process before buying materials or creating a catalogue.
Our assessment: Etsy is most useful to evaluate when you can explain why a particular buyer would choose your product and can make or supply it consistently. Access to a marketplace is not evidence that a new shop will receive orders.
Design a listing around buyer questions
For a physical product, make dimensions, materials, variations and processing time clear. Show the actual finish and scale rather than only a polished mockup. For personalization, define what the buyer submits, how you handle missing information and whether a proof is included.
For a digital product, specify file formats, software compatibility and what the buyer may do with the files. Explain that the purchase is digital so the listing cannot be mistaken for a shipped item. Test the files and instructions from a new buyer's perspective before publishing.
Price the full order
Etsy's Fees and Payments Policy currently lists a $0.20 USD listing fee and a 6.5% transaction fee, with additional conditions and charges. Payment processing, advertising, currency conversion, regional charges and possible setup costs mean there is no single fee percentage that describes every seller's order.
Calculate materials, production-partner costs, packaging, shipping, fees and the time required to make and support each sale. For custom goods, include proofs, corrections and communication. For downloads, allow for development, troubleshooting and updates rather than assuming delivery automation removes all ongoing work.
Test a manageable product range
Choose a small coherent range and document the production process. Measure actual preparation time and packing cost. Track orders and contribution after direct expenses separately from views or favorites. Avoid building a large inventory or buying ads until you can explain whether a completed order leaves enough to compensate your time.
Keep capacity in mind: a successful promotion is a problem if the delivery promises exceed what you can produce.
