Overview

Threadless offers Artist Shops as well as sales through the Threadless Marketplace. The important comparison is how earnings are calculated in each channel, rather than assuming that every order has the same margin.

Its official earnings guide says Artist Shop earnings are the retail price minus a base cost. That base cost includes a processing component based on the retail price. Marketplace sales use a separate royalty calculation. Review the channel an order came through before judging whether its payout matches your expectation.

Pricing and payout mechanics

As checked September 30, 2026, the guide describes a 5% processing component within Artist Shop base costs and a 10% royalty on the purchase price for Marketplace sales. Its payment policy also distinguishes managed pricing from setting your own prices, with different conditions around minimum compensation.

Artist earnings can pass through pending, cleared, and paid stages. The guide describes a 15-day pending period and monthly payments of cleared earnings, using PayPal for Artist Shop payments. Account setup and the current policy still control whether a particular balance is payable.

These mechanics do not establish a typical sales volume. Subtract your own creative tools, samples, promotional costs, and working time when deciding whether a shop is worthwhile. Do not assume that the difference between a displayed retail price and a product's manufacturing cost alone is your profit.

Prepare designs for the actual products

Choose products intentionally. Test whether the image placement, contrast, and lettering work at the size a customer will receive. A design should make sense on the product before you spend time promoting it.

Keep original files and the licenses for any components you use. The official payment policy says rights violations can affect payment, including reversing earnings. Do not build a shop around characters, photographs, or fonts whose commercial rights you have not established.

If you want consistent branding, decide on a limited visual style and explain the collection clearly. A shopper should understand what makes the work yours without having to browse a large group of unrelated experiments.

A practical launch checklist

  1. Review the current shop, marketplace, pricing, and payment settings
  2. Select a small group of designs that suit the audience you want to reach
  3. Preview each enabled product and remove poor fits
  4. Work through the actual earnings calculation before setting prices
  5. Track orders by channel, then compare cleared earnings with costs and time

Consider a product sample when you need to make claims about feel, print appearance, or quality. Digital previews are useful for positioning, but they do not prove those physical qualities.
